Life with Uncle Ed was always an adventure. A fond memory of mine is when Bonnie, Ed, Schwartz (also known as my husband Steve) and I went to a Raider game together. We all wore our black and silver Raider shirts. Uncle Ed really accessorized and wore his fur hat from Russia. Off we went in the Winkie Wagon. When we pulled into the lot at the Coliseum, everyone stepped aside for the "Raider Mobile." Between the costumes, the special vehicle and the "Son of Hibachi" (the grill Uncle Ed used to cook his famous Mexican Meat), everyone thought we must be VIP's, or at least those who skipped to the beat of their own drum. After the pre-game festivities, where we had everyone fooled, we went in to see the Raiders play. Ed in his Russian hat, with his bad knee and his charming qualities, Uncle Ed had everyone convinced that he was a retired Russian football player. The girls just seemed to swarm around him, which was not unusual, while Bonnie, Schwartz and I had our giggles.
I do not remember who we played, or if the Raiders even won that day. I do remember that I had the time of my life. After all, Uncle Ed "spared no expense," and just made the day an extraordinary experience. After the game, we arrived at the Winkie cold and hungry. Inside we had plenty of food left over, and warmth from the "Son of Hibachi." Where else could one have had such an experience, only with Uncle Ed.
